V² in OuterSpace

Gracias a mi prima hermana Olga (que vive en LA), quien siempre me está enviando información maravillosa e interesantísima, he tenido la oportunidad de conocer dos nuevas estupendas y fascinantes publicaciones. La primera es Nueva Luz Photographic Journal, una revista flexible y semi-brillante que expone, de una manera muy atractiva, información sobre arte contemporáneo y fotógrafos documentales provenientes de diversas culturas. Esta revista tiene una suerte de cualidad "independiente" que se aprecia mucho en este mundo atestado de publicaciones vacías. Olga y yo la descubrimos en una peculiar librería en Los Feliz, pintoresco vecinadario de Los Angeles. Una de las cosas que más me sorprendió es que esta revista ¡tiene 23 años circulando! Además, acaban de comenzar a publicar en color. Realmente vale la pena darle un vistazo.

La segunda publicación que Olga compartió conmigo hoy es Literal Magazine. Aún estoy explorando su contenido y lo que me ha encantado hasta ahora, es el hecho que es una revista bilingüe que ..."tiene un doble propósito: ser un foro donde confluyan  las expresiones artísticas latinoamericanas más importantes y, a la vez, abrir un espacio que permita a las nuevas voces  encontrar un sitio dónde expresarse", siendo también una revista que "...da cabida a la crítica y difusión del arte latinoamericano en su sentido más generoso, atisbando la posibilidad de convertirse, también, en una voz de referencia obligada para la comprensión del amplio universo cultural que se reúne ahora ya no bajo una misma lengua, sino cobijados a la sombra de un espíritu similar." Quise hacer cita textual de su propósito u objetivo y dejarlo intacto, porque me encantó.

¡No dejen de disfrutar de ambas revistas!

Thanks to my cousin-sister Olga from LA, who is always sending me the most interesting and amazing information, I got to know about two very interesting publications. The first one is Nueva Luz Photographic Journal. This flexible and semi-luster looking magazine, features compelling information about contemporary fine art and documentary photographers of diverse cultures. It also has a very distinctive "independent" quality that I appreciated very much. Olga and I discovered it in a local bookstore at Los Feliz, in Los Angeles. What surprised me is that Nueva Luz has been out on the shelves for 23 years! They just began publishing in full color. It's worth checking out (yes, photo kids, I am talking to y'all.)

The other publication's link Olga sent me today, is Literal Magazine. I am still exploring the content, and what has me considerably excited is the fact that it is a bilingual magazine that "...offers its pages with a dual purpose: as a forum where the most important Latin American creative expressions converge and as a vehicle for the expression of new voices," and "...provides a medium for the critique and diffusion of the Latin American literature and art, recognizing its potential strength as a point of departure for understanding that the broad cultural universe is not overshadowed by any single language, but is bathed in the light of a unified spirit." I had to quote them directly, as I really liked their statement of purpose, and preferred to leave it intact!

With Olga, in hot Venice Beach!

Había una vez un príncipe que quería casarse con una princesa, pero que no se contentaba sino con una princesa de verdad. De modo que se dedicó a 
buscarla por el mundo entero, aunque inútilmente, ya que a todas las que le presentaban les hallaba algún defecto. Princesas había muchas, pero nunca 
podía estar seguro de que lo fuesen de veras: siempre había en ellas algo que no acababa de estar bien. Así que regresó a casa lleno de sentimiento, pues
¡deseaba tanto una verdadera princesa!                                      

Cierta noche se desató una tormenta terrible. Menudeaban los rayos y los truenos y la lluvia caía a cántaros ¡aquello era espantoso! De pronto tocaron a la 
puerta de la ciudad, y el viejo rey fue a abrir en persona.

En el umbral había una princesa. Pero, ¡santo cielo, cómo se había puesto con el mal tiempo y la lluvia! El agua le chorreaba por el pelo y las ropas, se le 
colaba en los zapatos y le volvía a salir por los talones. A pesar de esto, ella insistía en que era una princesa real y verdadera.

"Bueno, eso lo sabremos muy pronto", pensó la vieja reina.

Y, sin decir una palabra, se fue a su cuarto, quitó toda la ropa de la cama y puso un garbanzo sobre el bastidor; luego colocó veinte colchones sobre el 
garbanzo, y encima de ellos, veinte almohadones hechos con las plumas más suaves que uno pueda imaginarse. Allí tendría que dormir toda la noche la 
princesa.

A la mañana siguiente le preguntaron cómo había dormido.

"¡Oh, terriblemente mal!" dijo la princesa. Apenas pude cerrar los ojos en toda la noche. ¡Vaya usted a saber lo que había en esa cama! Me acosté sobre 
algo tan duro que amanecí llena de cardenales por todas partes. ¡Fue sencillamente horrible!"

Oyendo esto, todos comprendieron enseguida que se trataba de una verdadera princesa, ya que había sentido el garbanzo nada menos que a través de los 
veinte colchones y los veinte almohadones. Sólo una princesa podía tener una piel tan delicada.

Y así el príncipe se casó con ella, seguro de que la suya era toda una princesa. Y el garbanzo fue enviado a un museo.

There was once a prince, and he wanted a princess, but then she must be a real Princess. He travelled right around the world to find one, but there was always something wrong. There were plenty of princesses, but whether they were real princesses he had great difficulty in discovering; there was always something which was not quite right about them. So at last he had come home again, and he was very sad because he wanted a real princess so badly.

One evening there was a terrible storm; it thundered and lightninged and the rain poured down in torrents; indeed it was a fearful night.

In the middle of the storm somebody knocked at the town gate, and the old King himself sent to open it.

It was a princess who stood outside, but she was in a terrible state from the rain and the storm. The water streamed out of her hair and her clothes; it ran in at the top of her shoes and out at the heel, but she said that she was a real princess.

'Well we shall soon see if that is true,' thought the old Queen, but she said nothing. She went into the bedroom, took all the bed clothes off and laid a pea on the bedstead: then she took twenty mattresses and piled them on top of the pea, and then twenty feather beds on top of the mattresses. This was where the princess was to sleep that night. In the morning they asked her how she slept.

'Oh terribly bad!' said the princess. 'I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!'

They saw at once that she must be a real princess when she had felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. Nobody but a real princess could have such a delicate skin.

So the prince took her to be his wife, for now he was sure that he had found a real princess, and the pea was put into the Museum, where it may still be seen if no one has stolen it.

Now this is a true story.

La Pastora, Caracas. Abril 2007. Photo V.Vitols

When I went to Caracas last April, I met a very nice young man called Francelvis, whom I told I was very interested in documenting (both with photography and video) the traditional neighborhood of La Pastora. That's the wonderful side of being such a talkative gal: coincidentally, he was born there, and has been involved with local politics and social work, so he knows the area like the palm of his hand. Reason enough to be my guide on this new photographic endeavor I embraced so gladly.

My original idea was to keep on bringing images of Venezuela to my school (and the U.S. in general) due to the huge interest they generate every time I show any work done in my country. Also, I saw this as an opportunity to work on a good, solid final for my Color Craft class last quarter.

I spent four days working on La Pastora, from 7 to 11 a.m., to get the best morning light and the early hours of this busy, vibrant part of Caracas. Next year, La Pastora will be 430 years old. The "pastoreños" are proud of their heritage and they affirm that Caracas began with them, as it was the first "main entrace to Caracas" or what in Spanish would be "porque esta era la puerta de entrada a Caracas".

I got good feedback on the images, and posted them on my MSN Live Space, and are on public display for anyone to see them. A couple of days ago, I got this very nice email from a fellow Venezuelan called Alexander Cruz, regarding the photo posted above. More or less, the original message translates like this:

"Hello Valentina. You don't know me, but today I was looking up for some information on a friend photographer in Venezuela, and one of the links I found directed me to your MSN Space. I was surprised that the first photo y saw is one of La Pastora and, coincidentally, the house that is on it was my great-grandmother's, and the man in the photo has to be living in the surroundings all his life, because I remember him since forever, standing on a nearby corner. By the way, you took this photo opposite the Market on Santa Rosa's corner.

It surprised me because, even though things have changed (the house isn't of the same color and the street look different), I immediately recognized the place. Most interesting, is that I saw the man in the photo after looking at the house. I haven't been back since eight-years ago.

I just wanted to let you know.

So, for me, this is what I consider a whole, rounded photographic experience. I wrote Alexander back and we have exchanged some emails on the subject. It has been a delight for me to know that I brought back dear memories to him, as he has been living in the U.S. for long (funny coincidence, he lived in Atlanta until two years ago) It has been fantastic, from the very beginning when I just mentioned my willingness to work this place, until this very moment, when I'm sharing this great experience in my blog.

Cuando estuve en Caracas en Abril, conocí a un muchacho encantador llamado Francelvis. Conversando y conversando, le comenté que estaba interesada en documentar La Pastora tanto con fotografía como con video. Lo bueno de hablarle hasta a las piedras es que hay mayores probabilidades de convertirse en un elemento de la alquilmia del destino: coincidencialmente, Francelvis nació y se crío en La Pastora, además de ser paticipante activo en temas políticos y sociales de la zona, la cual conoce como la palma de su mano. Imposible encontrar una mejor razón para pedirle que fuera mi guía en esta maravillosa
aventura fotográfica en la que me sumí.

Durante cuatro días estuve trabajando en diversas áreas de La Pastora. Siempre en búsqueda de la mejor luz, comenzaba mi periplo a las 7 de la mañana y concluía a las 11. Como era de esperar, la experiencia humana fue fantástica. El próximo año La Pastora estará cumpliendo 430 años de fundada. Los pastoreños, siempre orgullosos de su vecindario y parroquia afirman que con La Pastora nación la ciudad, "porque esta era la puerta de entrada a Caracas".

La idea original es continuar trabajando Venezuela como sujeto fotográfico para mis clases en la universidad, y para mostrar los resultados en cualquier lugar en los Estados Unidos. Me complace mucho decir que las imágenes de mi hermoso país son muy apreciadas por estos lados. Asimismo, este proyecto en particular se presentó como una excelente oportunidad para desarrollar una sólida serie de fotografías para mi final de mi clase de Fotografía a Color, por las cuales obtuve un muy buen feedback.

Una vez concluído el trimestre, colgué las fotos en este espacio. Hace un par de días recibí un correo electrónico muy agradable, enviado por Alexander Cruz, también venezolano, sobre la foto que encabeza este post. El mensaje fue el siguiente:

"Hola Valentina,

Tu no me conoces pero hoy estaba buscando informacion sobre una amiga fotografa en Vzla y uno de los links me llevo a tu pagina de myspace de MSN y me sorprendio que la primera foto que tienes es una de La Pastora y casualmente sale la casa de mi bisabuela y un senor que debe haber vivido toda su vida en esa esquina de la pastora porque lo recuerdo de siempre parado en una esquina. Por cierto, la foto la tomastes frente al mercado en la esquina de Santa Rosa.

Solo me sorpendio porque aunque las cosas han cambiado (ya la casa no es del mismo color y la calle se ve distinta) inmediatamente que vi la foto me ubique, lo mas interesante es que vi al senor de la foto despues de ver la casa. Yo no paso por alla desde hace como 8 anos.

Solo queria decir eso.

Todo esto me hace pensar en que ha sido una gran suerte haber tenido esta experiencia fotográfica, tan completa y redondita. Intercambié un par de correos con Alexander sobre el tema. Para mi ha sido un gran placer poderle brindar a este venezolano la posibilidad de recordar buenos tiempos. Es increíble poder decir que este trabajo ha sido maravilloso desde el momento en que fue concebido hasta este preciso instante, en el cual estoy compartiendo esta experiencia en mi blog.
